Duties
Electrical engineering technologists and technicians often do the following:
Electrical engineers construct and maintain electrical control systems and equipment, and repair electrical prototypes, components, and assemblies. Components, assemblies, and systems are tested in a simulated environment. They use test data to solve design challenges.
Electronic engineers and technicians often conduct the following tasks:
Education
An associate degree in electrical or electronic engineering technology is available at community colleges and technical institutions. ABET-accredited programs include math, algebra, computer languages, physics, and electronics.
The job obligations or industry may require employers to hire individuals with a bachelor's degree. Several jobs need a high school diploma.
Licenses and certifications
Electrical and electronic engineers and technicians may be certified. These optional credentials show the role holder's vast competence. NICET, ETA International, and the International Society for Automation all provide certification (ISA).
Important traits
Effective communication skills They must be able to follow instructions from electrical and electronic experts. They must also explain problems to engineers clearly.
Dedicated to perfection. Electrical engineers and technicians must be meticulous while designing, diagnosing, and repairing electronic and mechanical systems.
Math skills. Engineers use mathematics to analyze, develop, and debug...
Mechanic skills. Electrical engineering experts and technicians need hand tools and soldering irons to build components by hand.
Problem-solving skills Electrotechnical engineers must be able to identify and correct faults while building and assessing designs and prototypes.
Writing skills. Electrical and electronic engineers report on building, design, and testing difficulties based on their expertise. The data in a report must be presented logically and concisely.
Pay
The median annual wage for electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians was $72,800 in May 2023. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,420, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $105,320.
Job Projections
Employment of electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians is projected to grow 3 percent from 2023 to 2033, about as fast as the average for all occupations.
