Education
Many community colleges and technical schools offer associate's degrees in drafting or similar fields for aspiring drafters. An associate's or bachelor's degree is often required to enter the field of drafting.
The principles of design, drawing, and CAD software may all be covered in drafting programs. Associate's degrees may be obtained in as little as two years of full-time study. The duration of certificate and diploma programs varies, but most may be finished within a shorter period of time.
Drafting students often choose to specialize in one area, such as mechanical or architectural drafts.
Math, physics, computer technology, design, and computer graphics are some of the subjects that high school students might take in preparation for college.
Registration, Certification, and Licensure
Drafters may get accreditation from the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA). Certification indicates competence and understanding of nationally accepted techniques, even if it is not required.. Architectural, civil, and mechanical drawing certifications are among the specialties that may be obtained.
Qualities that are critical to success
Creativity. They must have the ability to translate designs and concepts into detailed drawings of structures, tools, and systems.
Focused on the smallest details. Technically correct blueprints must be converted by drafting professionals in accordance with the stated requirements.
Relationship building abilities. To ensure the accuracy of the final designs, drafters collaborate closely with other designers, including architects and engineers. This requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Skills in math. It is the job of the draftsman to draw out technical diagrams. Angles, weights, expenses, and other quantities may be needed to be calculated by them.
Competences in a certain field of expertise. All drafters, regardless of specialization, must be able to deal with databases and computer software such as CAD (BIM).
A good time management strategy. It is not uncommon for drafters to operate under pressure. Therefore, they must operate efficiently in order to meet the production targets they have been given.
Pay
Drafters earned an average yearly salary of $57,960 in May of 2020. When half of an occupation's workforce earns more than the median pay, the salary is referred to as the "median wage." The bottom 10% made less than $36,470, while the top 10% earned more than $87,970.
Job Projections
From 2020 to 2030, the overall employment of drafters is expected to decrease by 2%.
