Duties
In most cases, chemical technicians perform the following duties:
For the most part, chemists operate in groups. It is common for chemists or chemical engineers to supervise and assess the work of these groups. It's possible that they may act as guides for chemists who are just starting out in the lab or a particular field of study.
Research and development may benefit from the efforts of laboratory technicians. As an example, certain chemical technicians assist chemists and other scientists in the development of novel pharmaceuticals. The knowledge vacuum left by chemists moving on to other assignments is typically filled by chemical technicians.
Education
A two-year postsecondary degree in applied science or chemical technology is normally required for a chemical technician. A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as biology or physics, may be preferred by certain companies. If you have a high school diploma, you may be considered for other positions.
In addition to chemistry, many technical and community college programs in chemical technology and applied sciences include coursework in math, physics, and biology. Learning data analysis and modeling may benefit from courses in statistics and computer science.
Students benefit from hands-on training in performing experiments and the right use of tools and procedures in courses that contain a laboratory component. Students who participate in internships and co-op programs while in school receive valuable experience.
Qualities that matter
Analytical abilities. ' When performing tests and analyzing the results, chemical technicians need to be meticulous.
The ability to communicate effectively. There are many people who don't have a background in chemistry but need to understand what chemical technicians are doing. Many of their findings are communicated in the form of reports.
Dedicated to accuracy and precision. Technicians in the chemical industry are responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of sophisticated laboratory equipment. All their findings and observations should be documented with great care by the scientists as well.
The ability to interact with others. A chemical technician must be able to work successfully in a group with other technicians and professionals such as scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, among others.
Training
On-the-job training is common for chemical technicians, who are taught the right ways to perform experiments and operate equipment by more experienced technicians. Trainees with different levels of experience and education are required to complete different lengths of training.
Pay
During the month of May 2020, the average yearly salary for chemical technologists was $49,820. When half of an occupation's workforce earns more than the median pay, the salary is referred to as the "median wage." Between the bottom 10% and the top 10% of earners, there was a wide range in incomes.
Job Projections
From 2020 to 2030, chemical technicians' employment is expected to expand by 5%, which is lower than the national average for all professions.
